Azog the Defiler is a significant antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, specifically within the events leading up to and depicted in The Hobbit.
He was a powerful Orc chieftain of Moria, also known as Gundabad. He ruled the goblin horde that inhabited the ancient dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dûm, after driving out Durin's folk.
Azog is infamous for killing King Thrór, Thorin Oakenshield's grandfather, beheading him and carving his name into Thrór's forehead. This act ignited the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
He met his end during the Battle of Azanulbizar, where he was slain by Dáin Ironfoot. Azog's death marked a pyrrhic victory for the Dwarves, but his legacy of hatred fueled conflict and ultimately contributed to the events of The Hobbit.
